We are thrilled with the value, the noise not so much – So to be clear, this does produce the lovely nugget ice that everyone craves. Light, easy to chew, and really makes for a nice cold drink. It also produces it quickly, with the first ice appearing in just a few minutes after starting it. Within an hour you will have close to a full bin. One thing that many don’t seem to understand about these machines is that they don’t have any internal refrigeration outside of the ice making capability. The bin is in a constant state of following ice above it replenishing the water supply below it. I noticed other reviewers talking about how you can only add more water by removing the ice tray. We didn’t bother, we just poured extra water off to one side and it melted a little bit of the ice on the way down. But of course the ice was melting anyway. The catch is that it’s a bouncing act between keeping enough water in the unit if it’s being used frequently when you can’t see the water level. Even when you can see it, it’s hard to judge how much the existing ice is going to contribute to that water level over time. We did end up overfilled one time, but it was pretty easy to deal with. I don’t know how much power this thing uses, but with as much noise as it makes I would guess a decent amount of power it’s going down the drain. For the first night or two we just left it on, but then we realize that we need to just start it each day when we think we will have demand for ice. That’s when the timer came in handy, because we could just take a guess at when we thought folks would be ready for refreshments, and tell it to start about an hour prior to that. I can see why the big brand name of these things came up with the side reservoir you could monitor, but it double the price of this one I’m happy to take a chance on keeping up with the water. We had it on the kitchen counter, and that seemed to amplify the noise. I might try to adapt a different spot that has a little bit of insulation to cut down on the vibration. I would equate the noise level to about what a automatic bread machine makes while needing the dough, or perhaps a higher power microwave with a turntable. Not particularly loud, but it does run a lot, on and off and we found it distracting.

Sonic ice – Ice maker does make the sonic nugget ice, takes a little longer than I would like to fill up the basket but it does what I need it to do otherwise. Easy to use, noise level is not to bad and I have it under my cabinets on the counter so I had assumed it would be a bit louder there but it’s not bad at all.
